Adventure Motorsports

So called "adventure" motorsports include the likes of karting, off–road motorcycling and 4x4 driving, quad bikes and even rallying and Formula One.
Karting
Karting, which first appeared in the 1950’s, has developed into and international sport, widely recognised as a suitable training ground for champion drivers of the future. For beginners, a good "taster" to the sport is provided by the "arrive and drive" programmes offered by many karting tracks.
Such programmes offer new karters the opportunity, on payment of a fee, to drive a 4–stroke go kart in order to get a feel for competitive racing. This is a superb method of getting a taste of the sport, without the substantial outlay of purchasing a kart and the accompanying safety wear.
The majority of programmes offer the provision of all required safety equipment (see below), but checking up is recommended, as injury is a less than satisfactory introduction to any sport.
Off Road Motorcycling
For riders with little or no off–road riding experience, one of the many schools who advertise on the Internet is recommended. Such schools offer reasonably–priced courses for beginners (with or without their own bike) with plenty of trail riding practice and often, one–to–one tuition from professional instructors.
Various techniques are covered, including proper riding posture, throttle ⁄ clutch control, negotiating unusual terrain and bike recovery.
4x4 Driving
Inexperienced off–road 4x4 drivers must be aware of their vehicle’s driving characteristics, limitations and how all the controls work. Vehicle dimensions, including the lowest point of clearance, are also important. Additionally, emergency supplies in case of breakdown are a good idea, as is taking a passenger.
ATV’s ⁄ Quad Bikes
When riding an ATV, the combination of speed and unusual ground conditions can have unforeseen consequences. Beginners are advised to keep 5 points of contact with the vehicle, namely BOTH hands, BOTH feet and bottom, ensuring easy control of the bike. Feet should remain on the footplates at ALL times; attempting to steady the bike with the feet can result in them being caught up in the rear wheels.
Riders should endeavour to remain relaxed, leading to an easier ride and less tiring of the arms. Additionally, maintaining a low body position lowers the centre of gravity and increases the stability of the bike.
Safety Tips, Clothing & Equipment
Karts enjoy an enviable safety record, with a low centre of gravity making them difficult to overturn (except in collisions) and relatively low speeds. However, accidents can and do happen and all drivers should be equipped with approved purpose–made driving suits ⁄ leathers, safety helmets, gloves and shoes that cover the ankles.
Additionally, the high pitched noise of kart motors may damage hearing following prolonged exposure. Foam rubber ear plugs, available from most chemists, are recommended to reduce the risk.
The largest category of motorsport gear is motorcycle gear. From leather jackets, helmets, boots and gloves to body armour and other protective gear, it is essential wear for all adventure motorcycle riders. Produced by various manufacturers, items come in a wide range of styles and materials, customised to ensure the required levels of safety and comfort.
Volcom supplies a wide range of clothing and accessories for both sexes, many suitable for use in adventure motorsports.
